Teacher Notes
- This project is for use with deaf students at post
primary level, from about 13 years upwards.
- It is intended for all deaf students in mainstream
schools and in special schools, under the direction of a teacher.
- The skills learned are considered to be essential
ICT life skills for deaf students.
- Throughout the project deaf student applies to
those students who are deaf, deafened or hard of hearing.
The project could be part of
- the Transition Year programme
- the Junior School Certificate programme
- the Leaving Certificate Applied programme (Communication
Studies)
- the Post Leaving Certificate programme (Communications)
The project is divided into three
parts:
- Using fax
- using e-mail
- using the SMS feature of the mobile phone
Each part is divided into three lessons.
It would be expected that the lessons would proceed at a pace suited to the
needs of the students. However one could estimate 10 hours as an average time
allocation to complete the project.
Each lesson has specific student tasks
associated with the lesson. The tasks involve working independently, in pairs
and in groups.
What
you will need
- Internet access for each student
- Access to a fax machine for the group
- Access to a mobile phone for each student
- Access to a scanner (not essential)
- Desk top publishing software such as Microsoft
Publisher
- A mail order catalogue such as the Argos catalogue
- Each student should have a notebook to record new
vocabulary and key phrases. A basic vocabulary list is included in the project.
However the student should add to this list as the project progresses. This
is good practice for any deaf student.
