This site is primarily a resource site. It contains two main archives of digital photographs from the town of Carlow, Ireland. The Michael Purcell archive contains photographs from over a hundred years ago. The other archive consists of photographs taken by local primary school teachers as part of a summer course on digital photography from the years 2003-2005-2006-2007. While these images are open to a wide variety of uses by different parties, the projects section is very focused on children using these images.Hence the following extracts from the Irish primary curriculum refer to this section specifically but not exclusively. Extracts from the Irish Primary curriculum which inform the nature of this site. "It is a fundamental principle of the geography curriculum...that
children should develop an understanding of the world through direct experience and
activity. Thus the curriculum recommends that the exploration of the human environments
should be based firmly in the local environment of the child at all levels in the primary
school." "To develop knowledge and understanding of local, regional and wider environments and their relationships. To encourage the development of a sense of place and spatial awareness. To understand some of the natural, social or economic processes which create, sustain or change environments. To engage in active exploration of local or other environments as an intrinsic
element of learning." " A major concern in this curriculum is the involvement of children in the study of personal and local history. This curriculum places an emphasis on the study of 'everyday lives' of what may
be termed 'ordinary people'. "All history rests on evidence. History in the primary school should
engage the child in finding, selecting and analysing a wide range of sources which can
tell us about the past." "Acquire some understanding of change and continuity, including an awareness of factors which may have caused or prevented change, and come to appreciate that events may have a number of causes and outcomes." "Develop a sense of personal, local, national, European and wider
identities through studying the history and cultural inheritance of local and other
communities." |
