ATP is the name given to an energy transporting
chemical Adenosine triphosphate. This molecule contains three Phosphate
groups attached to an Adenosine molecule.
If the third phosphate group is removed from ATP
then you are left with Adenosine diphosphate ADP
and a phosphate group .
This process releases about 30kJ of energy. Any chemical reaction in the
cell that requires energy can use this fact to get the necessary energy
to proceed (if more than 30kJ of energy is required then two or more ATP
molecules can be used).
If a reaction requires energy then ATP is
broken down to ADP and
releasing the necessary energy
If a reaction is releasing energy then the energy is used to make
ATP from ADP and .
This stores the energy is a more manageable form which can then be used
as required.
If you think of a glucose molecule as a form of money then it is a 50
Euro note. This is not a very convenient way to hold your money if you
want to spend it a little at a time. If you convert it into 50 x 1 Euro
coins these are more usefu
