Music is made up of sounds. Rhythm deals specifically with the duration of these sounds. Long sounds and shorter sounds can be arranged in patterns. These patterns are called rhythm patterns. Sounds are often combined to make up rhythm patterns. These patterns can also be repeated throughout a piece of music. Song lyrics are often chosen because of the rhythm patterns occurring in the words. The syllables form patterns, which often fit nicely with a group of notes. We can make use of syllabic patterns in words, when teaching rhythm patterns to children.
