                                                          Literacy Resources

These literacy resources, for the emergent reader, I have created out of the direct needs of the children I teach. I use them to supplement the actual teaching of the children. For example I would use some word attack grids and some phonological flip cards as a "warm up" exercise, before tackling the child's own reading.
Also, I would have children of varying degrees of ability and this would be a major consideration in the selective use of these literacy aids. These resources can also be used by parents, in conjunction with the class teacher, to develop the literacy levels of the children in a homework context.
The inspiration for these resources is based on guidelines provided by Marie Stubbings, an expert in the area of dyslexia. Her excellent  talks in Carlow were arranged by Carlow Education Centre. She also had an excellent idea re improving sight vocabulary by means of word grids. I have developed this idea by using the three Dolch lists which cover 50% of all reading. I have found that they work quite well. Of all the resources on this site I would regard them as the most important.
The remaining resources are flip cards. These must be folded horizontally to create the flip effect. On one side you have the problem. When you flip over the card you have the solution.

Word Grids: I find these very effective for teaching children a basic sight vocabulary. Each sheet contains a single grid. On that grid you have four words from the relevant Dolch list. The four words are repeated in a random manner throughout the grid. The grids are hard work but the children stay with them as they realise they do learn the words!

Visual Discrimination: To use these cards effectively make sure that the child studies the image or text before flipping the card.
