LESSON 4 - Instruments and Styles



(Not to be confused with 'swing')
This is also known as the Big Band sound. Jazz bands became popular in the 1930s and 1940. (Remember Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon in the film Some Like it Hot). They were also in great demand as dance bands.

There are about 12 to 20 musicians in a jazz band.There is a brass section, a woodwind section and a rhythm section.

Brass section: trumpets, trombones and flugelhorns

Woodwind section: saxophones and clarinets

Rhythm section: drums, double bass, guitar, piano and vibraphone
