LESSON 4 - Instruments and Styles



Dixieland began in New Orleans between 1910 and 1920. It is also called New Orleans Jazz and Classical Jazz.

Black marching bands used to play at funerals. This music began to be played by dance bands. The rhythm and harmony are provided by the rhythm section. The tune is played by each of the melody instruments in turn while the others improvise jazz counterpoint. You can hear different melodic lines playing independently of each other: the texture is busy. Sometimes one of the instrumentalists sings a verse of the song. Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong played in Dixieland style. Here are three thirty-second examples:
